OPENS THE DOORS OF LIVINGBOX
It is modular, prefabricated, transportable, recyclable and has MAKE IT SUSTAINABLE certification. It is “Livingbox”, the Smart House designed and built by Edilportale on a concept of the University of Trento.
The energy-efficient prototype will be open for preview at Smart Village 2013 – the Exhibition-Meeting on sustainable architecture and energy efficiency organized by Edilportale and Made, in collaboration with Agorà, within Made Expo in Milan from 2nd to 5th October.
Livingbox represents the first operational phase of a process of analysis and insight into the opportunities of the prefabricated residential units inaugurated by Edilportale in 2006 with the eponymous international design competition, which saw the participation of over 3,000 designers from all over the world and the presentation of 1,048 projects.
The considerations arising from the competition and the many experiences of recent years have now been brought together into the creation of the prototype, which can be previewed in the Smart Village area. With Livingbox the prefabricated residential unit blends architecture and design into a limited functional space, where the smallest details are taken care of, from the structure to the systems and furnishing.
Several well-known brands collaborated in creating the prototype which will be on display at the next edition of Smart Village.

WORLD PREMIERE
THE PROJECT
The reference design solution is a prefabricated modular unit, designed to fit in a container to be erected as a single unit or as an aggregation of several blocks. Flexibility is one of the main requirements of Livingbox. The living module presents a versatile system for residential or hospitality use.
In the first case it is a dwelling from 45 to 80 square meters, equipped with a fixed block for kitchen-bathroom and a multi-purpose customisable area. Alternatively it can be organized as a hotel room, with a 4.5 square metre hall, an 18 square metre room, a bathroom with dressing room and multi-purpose space. The overlapping or the combination of several modules can also create a multi-storey residential or hospitality structure.
Consisting of two shells which can be joined, each one of 2.5 x 10 metres, Livingbox can be easily transported by means of an articulated truck. The completion time of the module has been minimized and calibrated with a view to sustainability and biocompatibility, by employing minimum external energy for assembling the module which is carried out almost completely dry.
Livingbox is also designed to be recyclable and energy efficient.
The structure, made of cross-laminated (XLAM) spruce wood bearing panels 90 millimetres thick, is biocompatible and allows CO2 emissions to be limited both in the assembly phase and in the management and decommissioning phases.
The cladding consists of walls with a very low transmittance value to minimize the required energy. This objective was achieved with the layering of different natural thermoacoustic insulating materials for a positive balance in terms of CO2 emissions, and with limited thickness to the benefit of the living space: Rockwool panels for the vertical thermal coat and Edilana for insulating the floors.
As an alternative to the solid masonry construction systems, the AQUAPANEL® Knauf dry construction system has been used. It consists of reinforced concrete slabs with significant qualities of strength and flexibility which contributes to keeping down costs and processing times.
The ventilated roof cladding system Roofingreen NATURE, of great aesthetic impact, is obtained by assembling a series of modules whose green surface is green solidarised to a layer of insulating material in XPE of variable thickness depending on the thermal-acoustic performance sought.
Livingbox can be powered by solar thermal collectors, photovoltaic panels or cogeneration and small wind turbine systems, and equipped with heating and cooling systems by heat pump with air-water exchange, as well as design solutions that maximize energy self-sufficiency, like brise-soleil or openings facing south to optimize the contribution of solar radiation.
For the prototype on display at Smart Village we chose the Sherpa heating and cooling heat pump with air-water exchange heat pump provided by Olimpia Splendid, which stands out for its extremely compact size and its high energy efficiency modules. Sherpa allows the heat present in the air to be exploited and transferred to the system terminals in an efficient way: for each kW of energy consumed, it is capable of producing 4 kW of heat energy. In other words, 75 % of the energy is free, renewable and clean.
The new range of high thermal performance di AGB sliding windows contribute to optimising the energy efficiency of Livingbox.
Velux systems were chosen for the natural lighting systems. In addition to the roof window, the VELUX sun tunnel - an innovative model of tubular skylight that appears externally with the same design as roof windows, integrating harmoniously into the architectural line of the roof - captures and transports the natural light inside Livingbox making it extremely luminous.
The cladding has been realized with the Prefa FX.12 system of aluminium sheetswhose irregular edges create a play of light and shadow with iridescent look different depending on the lighting. The crimping technique makes it possible to fix the panels directly to the boarding or to the substructure by means of the pre-cut holes and without the need for staples, thus simplifying and speeding up the installation.
The interior furnishing and the peripheral control services have been designed for a rational use of the spaces without wasting resources and materials for an immediately habitable and comfortable unit.
The eco-sustainable kitchen system MECCANICA by Demode engineered by Valcucine - consisting of a series of easy-to-assemble iron pipes - allows maximum dematerialization. Designed without sides and without doors, the result is a completely naked structure employing a minimum of material.
The furnishing systems supplied by CLEI respond to the same need to blend design and functionality with a rational use of the space: the shelf-cupboardAPP fixed to the wall that turns into a table; the convertible system ITO with a pull down double bed and folding sofa with sliding seat, reclining backrest and integrated footrest, and then the HOME OFFICE system to create an office area even in a few square metres.
The project also includes the installation of the Bticino home automation system My Home di Bticino for monitoring, control and remote management.
Livingbox is an environmentally friendly living unit following the laws of nature, without permanently using its resources. This philosophy has led to it receiving ICMQ MAKE IT SUSTAINABLEcertification, a prestigious recognition of research in the field of sustainability.
The modular home of the future will be exhibited for the first time in Smart Village 2013, within Made Expo, to welcome the thousands of professionals who want to study its every detail.
